Email and Instant Messages bring down Congressman Mark Foley

Mark Foley has learned the hard way that what you type in an email or instant message is not anywhere near private. This should be a lesson to all to pay attention to what you say in an email or instant message. (And to not make sexual advances to minors, of course!)

Not only can messages be intercepted by network administrators, but chat logs can also be stored on an individual’s computer. Some messaging clients may log all conversations by default unless you disable logging. (Now is the time to check the settings of your messaging client…) If you disable chat logs, but the people you chat with don’t, it really doesn’t get you very far.

Now that the Foley scandel has erupted, the FBI is looking into his actions to determine whether or not he broke the law. His career is over regardless.
